A free welding simulator you can open today is a phone app or a browser game, not a virtual booth.
Fronius publishes Welducation Basic as a free phone and tablet app: a welding quiz plus a welding game, with a ranking list. Lincoln Electric, Fronius, Miller, and Seabery also sell booth-sized VR and AR trainers, and those public pages ask for a quote or a demo instead of offering a free download.
Use the free app or a browser game to learn the motion in a low-stakes way. When you want a read on a bead you already ran on metal, photograph it. That is a different job than a simulator.
What is actually free
Fronius Welducation Basic
On Fronius's own page, Welducation Basic is a free-of-charge app for smartphone and tablet. The quiz covers welding know-how. The welding game is virtual practice, with no machine in front of you. Results can go on a ranking list. It does not look at a coupon you welded.
Browser games
A lot of "free welding simulator" searches land on browser games, including ones people look up as unblocked. They load in a tab and cost nothing. They are games. The welding games page covers what they are good for.
DimeVision Free is not a simulator
The DimeVision welding app, on the free plan, is 3 scans a day of a photo of a real bead: defect callouts and what to fix on the next pass. It does not put a virtual torch in your hand. Pro is $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year to save scans to your logbook and portfolio, plus Danny text chat past the free daily cap. Details are on pricing.
Honest tradeoffs
- A free app or browser game needs no gas, no coupons, and no hood. You can learn names and practice staying on a line. You cannot hear a real arc, and you cannot see porosity on your own plate.
- A booth VR or AR rig is closer to a torch in your hand. The makers describe a virtual puddle, real torch shapes, or both. You do not get one because a search said "free". See VR welding simulators.
- Real practice costs wire, metal, and time. It is the only place the puddle is yours.
When to move to real practice
Move when you can hold a steady line in the app or the game and you have a machine. Run a short bead on a coupon. Then photograph it. A simulator will not tell you whether that bead shows porosity, undercut, or spatter. A scan of the photo can. How the scan is put together is on how a DimeVision scan works, and how the two tools fit is on DimeVision vs welding simulators.
The longer comparison of simulator apps is the welding simulator apps review.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a welding simulator that is actually free?
Fronius Welducation Basic is a free phone and tablet app with a quiz and a virtual welding game. Browser welding games are also free to open. Booth VR and AR trainers are sold as hardware, not as a free download.
Are browser welding games the same as a welding simulator?
They share the idea of practice without an arc. A game loads in a tab and follows the game's rules. A booth simulator uses a torch-shaped tool and, on the rigs described here, a virtual puddle. Neither one looks at a bead you ran on metal.
When should I stop practicing only on a free simulator?
When you can hold a steady line and you have a machine. Run a coupon, photograph the bead, and read the visible defects. Virtual practice does not show porosity, undercut, or spatter on your plate.
Does DimeVision replace a free welding simulator?
No. DimeVision is a practice aid for a photo of a real bead. Free is 3 scans a day. A simulator or a game is for rehearsing the motion before you weld. Use both if you have them.
