Fillet Weld Triangle symbol. Most common weld.
V V-Groove Both sides beveled
˅ Bevel Groove One side beveled
U U-Groove Both sides U-shaped
J J-Groove One side J-shaped
|| Square Groove No bevel, square edges
Plug Weld Filled hole in one member
Slot Weld Elongated hole
Spot Weld Resistance spot weld
Seam Weld Linear resistance weld
Flange Weld Edge flange
Surfacing Weld Build-up or overlay

How to Read Weld Symbols

The Three Parts

Symbol Placement Matters

PlacementMeaning
Below the lineWeld on arrow side (where arrow points)
Above the lineWeld on other side (opposite of arrow)
Both sidesWeld on both sides of joint

Size and Length

Example: 1/4 on left of symbol means 1/4 inch weld size.
