How to Become a Certified Welder
Your path from beginner to certified welder in 2026
Step 1: Learn the Basics
Before you can test, you need skills.
Option A: Trade School
- Cost: $5,000-15,000
- Time: 6 months to 2 years
- Includes: Hands-on training, job placement help, certification prep
Option B: Apprenticeship
- Cost: Free (you get paid while learning)
- Time: 3-4 years
- Includes: On-the-job training plus classroom
Option C: Self-Training
- Cost: Equipment plus practice material
- Time: Varies
- Includes: Your practice, online resources
Step 2: Choose Your Process
MIG: Easiest to learn, good for fabrication, fast production.
TIG: Highest quality, required for aerospace, takes more skill.
Stick: Most versatile, works outdoors, good for heavy steel.
Recommendation: Start with MIG to learn fundamentals. Add TIG and stick later.
Step 3: Get Practical Experience
You need to be able to run consistent beads before testing:
- Practice on scrap metal
- Focus on consistency
- Learn all positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead)
- Get feedback from experienced welders
Step 4: Choose Your Certification
- AWS Certified Welder (CW) - Most recognized, tests specific process and position
- API 1104 (Pipeline) - Required for oil and gas work
- ASME (Boiler and Pressure Vessel) - Required for pressure vessels
- State/Local Certifications - Some states require additional licensing
Step 5: Prepare for the Test
What to Study
- Your specific code (D1.1, API 1104, etc.)
- Acceptance criteria
- Weld positions
- Joint geometry
What to Practice
- Your test process and position
- Same thickness and material as test
- Same machine if possible
- Starting and stopping technique
What to Bring
- PPE (helmet, gloves, leathers)
- Tools (chipping hammer, wire brush, grinder)
- Filler metal
- Yourself, rested and ready
Step 6: Take the Test
- Receive material and specifications
- Prepare the joint
- Weld the test piece
- Inspector examines visually
- If required, mechanical testing (bend, break)
